WHERE TO STAY ON YOUR ROUTE 66 ADVENTURE

If there’s one thing you need after a long day on the road it is a good motel or hotel to retire to for the night. Luckily, there are plenty of options for Route 66 accommodations to choose from. Plus, on The Mother Road, many of the best motels and hotels are attractions in and of themselves.

Route 66 is home to some of the best vintage motels you can find, with iconic neon signs to match (be sure to make room for a stop to check them out even if you don’t have a reservation). Many of these historic motels have been renovated to feature all of the modern conveniences you could ask for (like premium mattresses and luxurious linens).

We focus on historical lodging options that are well-rated and well-located. Many offer something unique or special for Route 66 travelers. These properties stretch from Chicago to Santa Monica and range from budget motels to luxury hotels. We include both the most popular and iconic vintage motels as well as lesser-known historic accommodation options along Route 66. This way you can choose the properties that best suit your trip, style, and budget.

So let’s get on with finding you the best places to stay for your Route 66 road trip!

This depends on your travel style and whether there are specific motels or hotels that you want to stay in along the route. Many people book their accommodation before they leave for their trip, whereas others who may be less certain about their route or travel time may just book a day or two in advance.

If there are specific Route 66 motels or hotels you want to stay in, I’d definitely recommend booking these in advance. Some of the most popular, especially those with a limited number of rooms, may be booked out weeks in advance.

Similarly, if you have specific requirements or needed amenities, like pet-friendly hotels or hotels with ADA accessible rooms, I’d recommend booking those well in advance to ensure you have adequate lodging at your destination.

Most Route 66 motels and hotels feature en-suite bathrooms, providing you with a private space that includes a toilet and a bathtub and/or shower. You can also expect fundamental in-room necessities such as towels, basic toiletries, and a television. Common amenities in the rooms often include hairdryers, alarm clocks, coffee makers, mini-refrigerators, and microwaves. Several motels and hotels also provide additional features like swimming pools, picnic areas, guest laundry facilities, business centers, and gift shops. All motels come equipped with heating, and many also offer air conditioning, which is particularly important during the hot summer months, especially in the western stretches of the route where temperatures can soar. While motels typically do not have on-site restaurants, some hotels do feature dining options and bars. Nevertheless, most accommodations listed in this guide are conveniently located within walking distance of eateries. You'll often find free wireless internet and complimentary on-site parking at Route 66 motels. However, some hotels in larger urban areas like Chicago, St. Louis, Tulsa, and Los Angeles may charge a fee for parking. Many motels provide either an in-room coffee maker for your convenience or free coffee in the motel lobby. Additionally, a number of them offer a light continental breakfast or a morning pastry to their guests, with a few serving a cooked breakfast. Hotels are generally more likely than motels to serve a cooked breakfast; however, hotels that do offer breakfast may charge an additional fee, unlike many motels that include it in their service. .
